Alcohol sale to people under 16

Until now it was not allowed to give young people alcohol to drink at restaurant and pub. But now it is also prohibited to sell them alcohol in shops.

New law re childrens’ name in Luxembourg from 1st May 2006

Until now children got automatically the familyname of the father. A new law is in preparation that parents have the right to choose as familyname either the father's, the mother's or the double name. The choice has to be taken at the birth of the first born. Because of the "name's unity" the following children get the same familyname as the first born. The parents get also wider rights concerning the choice of the Christian name - only restriction: the child must not suffer because of its name. Also stillborn children can get Christian- and familyname in the future and can be buried officially.

Limited imports to Luxembourg

Customs authorities, especially at Findel, are registering an increasing number of irregularities with import of goods. Remember that import to Luxembourg is not unlimited: Import from other EU-countries is restricted to 800 cigarettes, 90 l wine, 110 l beer and 10 l strong alcohol. From non-EU-countries the limits are 200 cigarettes, 2 l wine and 1 l strong alcohol. Adults may import other goods only for a value of 175 €!

Automatic radarcontrols in France

Remember that quite a number of automatic radarstations are doing their job on French highways. If you get flashed driving a Luxembourg registered car, the French authorities have the right (according to an agreement with Luxembourg) to claim the payment of the fines in Luxembourg. Since January 2005 already 1300 Luxembourg drivers have been caught - 65% have paid. If you "forget" to pay and you get caught at a French check it will cost you quite a sum.

Piste cyclable des Trois Rivières

The bicycle path "Piste cyclable des Trois Rivières" is almost finished: it leads along the rivers Our, Sure and Moselle and has a length of 85 km. Only the sections Machtum/Grevenmacher and Grevenmacher/Mertert are still roadworks, but from September 2006 on the whole distance should be "cyclable" (even the way on from Schengen to Metz!).

The Norwegian Secretary of Transport has inaugurated on 30th August a new internet side about the security inside and outside your car: www.vegvesen.no/sikkerbil/. You get information of different car types and their security characteristics. On top of testresults and good advice you get the possibility to connect to other links related to car security.

We all know how expensive it can be to use one's handy abroad. EU is now informing on an own webside of the different tariffs applied, thereby hoping to press companies and prices somewhat down the high hill. The side is not complete, but a good start: ! www.euroaming !

26 000 – the new helpline of ACL

You reach from 1st October on ACL (Luxembourg Car Association) under the new number 26 000 day and night if you need help: you get invited to push "1" if you are in need in Luxembourg and "2" if you call from abroad. Do not forget +352-26000 if you call from abroad!

You can save your driving license

In Luxembourg you are missing your driving license when you have lost your capital of 12 points. Until now one driver has suffered this misfortune. But there is hope for all those who have lost already several points: you can go to a special training session to Colmar-Berg-Center (fee of 230.- €) and get back 3 points. The programme comprises theoretical, practical and psychological tests!
